An inquiry into the basic nature of literature. Questions raised in this course may include: What prompts the creation of imaginative literature? What purpose does literature serve in the cultural life of a community? What are its social, philosophical, spiritual, and aesthetic values? Some consideration may be given to techniques and major critical theories, but the focus will be on critical reading for the nonspecialist.
